Labor Day Weekend is upon us. For most people, this means it’s time to send the kids off to school and pack up all the white. For those of us lucky enough to be in Knoxville, it means a weekend filled with fireworks and football.
Mention the term “Boomsday” anywhere in the southeast and people will likely know what you are talking about. In case your new to town, or have been living under a rock for the past 24 years, Boomsday is the nation’s largest Labor Day weekend fireworks show.
This annual event brings more than 400,000 visitors to the Tennessee riverfront in Knoxville each year. It is easy to see why with a lineup that boasts food, games, music, and the biggest Labor Day boom in the nation.
With a new bridge and a new rib eating contest, there is high anticipation for Boomsday. he Henley Bridge renovations may have interrupted many morning commutes, but this project will have little affect on the legendary fireworks of Boomsday. Equally as exciting is the first annual RIBDonkulous Rib Eating Contest presented by Calhoun’s. For those unfortunate enough to have never tasted Calhoun’s barbeque sauce take our word and sign up.
On top of all that, Dollywood’s biggest announcement to date will be made at this year’s festival. There is plenty of speculation around the secret announcement that is soon to be revealed. Unfortunately there is no secret insight to offer here, but rather a recommendation to be front row for the fireworks show where it will be revealed.
Boomsday 2011 is sure to deliver great food, entertainment, and family fun it has become known for. For those who will be in the area this Labor Day weekend, make sure to take advantage of this event recognized as one of the top 20 by the Southeast Tourism Society.
Boomsday Festival is set for Sunday, September 4 from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Neyland Drive and Volunteer Landing in downtown Knoxville. Fireworks begin at approximately 9:30 p.m. and will create a rumble to remember featuring more than 10,000 shells in a fireworks display and choreographed to an original soundtrack produced by Star 102.1 FM.
